Uno

I’d never swum in the Caribbean until this trip to Costa Rica. ‘salright, but another first is exciting me more.

During a five hour rain storm, MJ convened a world championship of Uno in the budget backpack mecca. In several exciting rounds with ever changing rules, I pulled through to win first place. Beating off competitors from Arizona, Colorado, Texas and Bath, Avon I won a trophy and an Orio cookie.

I was thrilled.

Then we watched part of a Star Wars movie and ate a hamburger. You can’t get much more Costa Rican than that. A guilty feeling emerges of submitting to comfort – comfort food, comfort entertainment. Only we sleep in hammocks and cycle down potholed tracks in tropical storms to get it.

Sometimes travels are like that. It caters to what the majority of visiting people want. Cheap beer, pizza, English movies. Like the Khao San Road. Luckily, I consulted my crystal Lonely Planet ball, and I see cooperative farms, volcanoes, rafting, surfing and hiking in our future.

When in Puerto Viejo, think like a Puerto Viejan. So I’m off to get a rasta head band, some hair braiding and quite possibly shitfaced.
