Here are three simple steps to become less jaded.
First, quit your day job. Don’t actually tell them that you’ve quit – keep taking the money. But just don’t do the work. If you want to read Tim Ferriss’s book about the four hour work week, be my guest. Well Tim’s guest really. Until I start marketing my own book, the 10 hour work month. Then you can be my guest.
Second, start to write. It doesn’t have to be good, it just has to be self-expressive. In fact, it doesn’t have to be writing, it just has to be an outlet. It could be bowling, sketching, skeet shooting, making mustaches on sticks – whatever floats your boat. But make sure you do it regularly. Stop doing what you don’t like. Start doing what you do like more.
Third, get out more. Out could mean anything really, what I’m getting at is to go out and see the world and the people in it. They say that team sport is good for convalescence, and I’m inclined to agree. Which is pretty huge, considering that I think watching team sport is one of the biggest time-killers on the planet. One of the biggest. Don’t get me started on religion. See step two. Whatever floats your boat but doesn’t sink my battleship is fine here. Join a club, volunteer, deliver meals to people who can’t move much.
Don’t expect results overnight. Don’t expect to become the mascot for the Miami Dolphins in a day. The aim here is simply to become cynical. That sounds kind of ridiculous eh? Is it worse to be cynical or jaded? In my opinion cynicism is a healthy step in the right direction on the road to becoming less jaded.
So much better than the, “how to murder you last bit of soul with fake optimism” crowd. Thanks for writing it up. 🙂
