At least on Derawan, the people claiming to protect turtle eggs are living a dual existence. When asked what they do with the turtle eggs they salvage off the beach, they don’t show you a hatchery, they say that they get good dollar for them. And then you see them boiling some to eat, and then they serve them at breakfast. Chickens – one, turtles – nil. Conservation minus one.
